Takeaways

What the reported numbers show

  • The gap is widening. Meta’s advertising growth exceeded Google’s by 4.3 points in Q1 2023 and 15.4 points in Q3 2026. The yearly average was 9.9, 10.7 and 10.6 points in 2023–2025 and 15.3 points in the first nine months of 2026.
  • The Q3 2026 widening came from Google. Meta grew 25.9% against 27.5% in Q2; Google slowed to 10.6% from 14.4%, with Search & other at 12.0% from 16.8%.
  • Scale is converging. Meta’s Q3 2026 advertising revenue was USD 63.1bn against Google’s USD 82.0bn (77%, up from 52% in Q1 2023), and 99.5% of Google Search & other alone.
  • Google’s other lines lag. YouTube ads grew 9.2% in Q3 2026. Network shrank year on year in every one of the 14 quarters from Q1 2023 to Q2 2026, then grew 1.4% in Q3 2026.
  • Currency: measured for Meta only. Meta’s stated ex-FX advertising growth differed from reported by at most 4 points in any quarter (Q1 2025: 16% reported, 20% ex-FX; Q1 2026: 33% and 29%) and equalled reported growth in Q3 2026. Alphabet does not disclose constant-currency growth for its advertising lines, so currency’s contribution to the gap between the two companies is not quantified here; all growth comparisons are on reported figures.

  • Lines. Meta: “Advertising” revenue in segment information (Family of Apps; equals consolidated advertising). Google: “Google advertising”, the sum of Google Search & other, YouTube ads and Google Network, before traffic acquisition costs.
  • Growth. Year-on-year growth is recomputed from reported US-dollar revenue. Meta also states ex-FX advertising growth, shown in the data table; Alphabet states constant-currency growth for total revenues and by region but not for its advertising lines, so Google ad-line growth is reported only.
  • Consistency. No prior-year figure was restated in a later release. Google’s components sum to its total every quarter, and both companies’ quarters sum to their 10-K annual figures (Meta within USD 1m of rounding). Every Q4 is printed in its own release.
  • Cut-off. Q3 2026 releases: Meta 21 October 2026, Alphabet 28 October 2026.
